Hospital and healthcare systems are under increasing pressure to reduce costs due to declining reimbursement, new payment systems such as accountable care organizations, and the increase in high- copayment insurance plans resulting in comparison shopping by patients. Bundling of payments by Medicare and private insurers as well as performance based pay as a result of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) have stimulated a push for efficient, high- quality quality care (1) and have led hospitals to employ strategies of cost reduction in order to maintain their balance sheets (2).
