ExplORer provides real-time insights coupled with data analysis that goes beyond the operating room. Providers can compare their performance and learn from colleagues. OR managers can track granular case progression in real-time and forecast room utilization, staffing, admission in the postoperative wing, and supply/equipment use.
Surgical needs are often unknown or unclear, as preference cards are not regularly updated, nor are they designed to be used throughout the case. In our early research, nurses and scrubs explained that significant waste can be generated by a need to “over prepare” when the specific case needs were not known.
These extra items had to be put back a the end of the case, or were opened and cluttered the back table and generated unnecessary expense for the patient and the hospital. We designed ExplORer to address this problem, and in our pilot studies wasted disposable items were reduced by over 95%.
We also save hospitals money by decreasing OR time per case and preventing wasted supplies. More accurate setup and decreased delays can also lead to greater OR throughput, which may increase revenue for hospitals with high procedural/surgical demand.
Real-time data from the OR can provide alerts when procedures are running behind schedule, well before the case is complete. By tracking team progress on a step-by-step basis, problems can be identified early and case duration can be more accurately predicted. This knowledge allows for necessary scheduling adjustments to be made proactively for the procedures that follow as well as allocation of resources, nurses, and staff across the OR department.
ExplORer Surgical collects intraoperative performance data on each case including which tools are used at which times, how long each step takes, and which staff members participated in that procedure. This allows administrators and surgeons to compare past procedures to find optimal performance for that procedure, that surgeon and their surgical team.
By presenting tools and tasks in an easy-to-follow, clear guide for each surgeon and procedure, nurses unfamiliar with these surgeons can acclimate much more quickly to service lines, saving money on training and precepting.
Instruments and supplies are there when needed since specialty equipment is clearly identified to the responsible team member.
We aim to create better, safer and more efficient surgical teams. If you’re interested in updates as we expand to additional test sites, learning more, or receiving a trial of ExplORer Surgical, please send us the following information
